{"id":51561,"date":"2019-06-22T18:12:52","date_gmt":"2019-06-22T22:12:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=51561"},"modified":"2019-06-22T18:12:52","modified_gmt":"2019-06-22T22:12:52","slug":"lincoln-in-the-bardo-prompt-11-and-12-hour-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2019\/06\/lincoln-in-the-bardo-prompt-11-and-12-hour-9\/","title":{"rendered":"Lincoln in the Bardo  (Prompt 11 and 12, Hour 9)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>He didn\u2019t mean to die,<br \/>\nand break his daddy\u2019s heart,<br \/>\nthat poor little Willy, but he did.<br \/>\nWe almost lost our Mr. Lincoln to grief.<\/p>\n<p>Only the kind spirits saw the danger,<br \/>\nknew what had to be done, and selflessly<br \/>\napplied limited etheric skills to pull the boy<br \/>\nfrom the clutches of schlerosis. To pull daddy<br \/>\nback from his shocked, catatonic state.<\/p>\n<p>The scene was chaotic, as one might expect<br \/>\nwhen a hodgepodge of circus clowns, comedians,<br \/>\nfathers and doting mothers in various states of decay<br \/>\nconfer on strategies best avoided by the living,<br \/>\nand as certain to confuse .<\/p>\n<p>But Mr. Lincoln was closer to joining them himself<br \/>\nthan any living person could see. He felt their pull,<br \/>\nand let them lead him back to his boy.<br \/>\nThe urgency of his love broke through to his son.<\/p>\n<p>Willy\u2019s spirit raised itself up just in time to be saved<br \/>\nfrom eternal misery. His spirit arose with a clap<br \/>\nof thunder to the afterlife, and Mr. Lincoln\u2019s spirit<br \/>\nwas yanked through the graveyard fence, away from the place.<\/p>\n<p>The spirits drifted back to their flamboyant displays and<br \/>\ncollegial mutterings, no emotion attached to the scene<br \/>\nthey had created. It had had to be done, and they did it.<br \/>\nA few of their number were rewarded.<\/p>\n<p>They ascended, to the bafflement of the others.<br \/>\nTo the bafflement of the readers.<br \/>\nTo understanding only of the brilliant writer who gave them life.<br \/>\nAnd one other, for whom the spirits of the bardo solved<br \/>\na long-standing literary problem.<\/p>\n<p><em>(I am uncomfortable posting this as a poem, but the hour is up and I have no time to revise now.
