Your job at the Mexican restaurant,
\njust you and the owner on weekends,
\npaid the rent. The landlord’s garden
\nyielded turnips. You didn’t like turnips.<\/p>\n
So, what’s a girl to do?
\nGet a full-time job, taking classes here and there.
\nIt took another twenty-five years
\nto get your graduate degree,<\/p>\n
find the job that you were meant to have,
\nteaching kids to read and write.
\nYou couldn’t have known then,
\nthat it was your calling,<\/p>\n
something you might have missed
\nif you’d been more affluent,
\nif you’d had more information.
