\nhe wrote for
\nwith a sort of defiant pride.<\/p>\n

They may have just barely survived,
\nbut he was around to nurture them
\nand sip from amber memories
\nevery time
\nhe coached us fledglings
\nto kill our babies<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I watched
\nas my own stories
\ngushed my mentor’s resources
\nand embarrassed my conscience
\nin the week’s mail.<\/p>\n

Now that we have fake news<\/del>,
\nthe yellow journalism of the Gilded Age
\nwears its mustiness
\nas a peculiar base note
\nfor a world that views war as a movie
\nand calls “hanging out” sex.<\/p>\n

The testimony of other men’s daughters
\npapers the walls of politicians,
\nand academics flog their credentials
\nto distance themselves
\nin flight plans.<\/p>\n

The Yellow Kid poses
\nin front of a hotel
\nhe’s just named
\nfor himself.<\/p>\n
