{"id":54401,"date":"2019-06-22T23:36:01","date_gmt":"2019-06-23T03:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=54401"},"modified":"2019-06-22T23:39:11","modified_gmt":"2019-06-23T03:39:11","slug":"the-universe-prompt-18-and-19-hour-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2019\/06\/the-universe-prompt-18-and-19-hour-15\/","title":{"rendered":"The Universe  (prompt 18 and 19, Hour 15)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Physicists claim the universe is shaped<br \/>\nlike a soccer ball, and we are inside, with holograms<br \/>\ncoating the boundaries,\u00a0 projecting all possible angles of view,<br \/>\nindividual and complete like Indra\u2019s net.<br \/>\nPhysicists claim that black holes extrude through the walls of space-time<br \/>\nlike scattered spikes that can suck us out<br \/>\nof this universe to be birthed into another<br \/>\n(could we but survive the trip).<\/p>\n<p>Physicists trumpet dark matter and dark energy,<br \/>\nplaces so black that nothing appears to exist.<br \/>\nYet neutrinos that no one has seen pour through the gaps<br \/>\nin the known particles each second, for unknown reasons,<br \/>\nwithout witness, outside the range of sight, unfelt.<br \/>\nWhy do they exist? Their only known property is<br \/>\nto bounce back when they are compressed.<br \/>\nDid neutrinos force the Big Bang? Do they drive expansion?<\/p>\n<p>Gloriously, we, whatever we are,<br \/>\nevolved for this world and time,<br \/>\nsmall bags of water, composed of nothing<br \/>\nbut billions of competing colonies of bacteria<br \/>\nmade from particles of stardust.<\/p>\n<p>We are animated by a life vibration no one comprehends,<br \/>\nthat seems like music in constant motion.<br \/>\nWe are eternity knowing itself as separation from oneness.<br \/>\nWe have senses to experience this life, so knowledge blooms.<br \/>\nThere is light, there is dissonance, there is movement,<br \/>\nthere is separation from other things.<br \/>\nThis is what it means to live.<\/p>\n<p>We have sensors.<\/p>\n<p>Quivering waves from space fill our ears with sounds<br \/>\nmade in the ancient past, taking light years to arrive.<br \/>\nThe shock waves of star births and atoms colliding,<br \/>\nof movement and the pulsing of galaxies,<br \/>\nof the slow drumming of black holes.<br \/>\nEven war cries and moans of devastation,<br \/>\nhymns of praise and nursery songs once sung<br \/>\nreverberate indefinitely through space,<br \/>\ncreating, always creating.<br \/>\nWe are moved to align and vibrate in reply,<br \/>\nlike human Chladni plates.<\/p>\n<p>Eyes and brains perceive fractured waves of light bouncing<br \/>\nand give the light names like crimson, gold and sky blue.<br \/>\nWe give textures names like rough, smooth, gritty, soft, wet.<br \/>\nLabel the tastes of bitter and sweet, sour and salt,<br \/>\ndefine the objects we start mouthing as infants.<br \/>\nThe smells of sweet lilacs and hyacinth, of roses and lemons,<br \/>\nof urine and death, saturate us with emotion<br \/>\nand codify remembered experiences.<br \/>\nThe senses define our experiences.<br \/>\nThey are our puppet masters.<\/p>\n<p>We were made for this world and this time,<br \/>\ninconsequential individuations of random origin.<br \/>\nWe ride this elegant, blue planet whose beauty we uncovered<br \/>\nas we floated through space, and it exists because<br \/>\ncompeting colonies of bacteria formed from stardust evolved<br \/>\nto coalesce here, and experience shared explosions of sound<br \/>\nand vivid eruptions of colored light in this one location.<\/p>\n<p>This small water planet rampant with life,<br \/>\nmade real and unique by our angles of view,<br \/>\nis the unlikely edge of the universe.<br \/>\nWe are learning it is our creation.<br \/>\nWe are the creating creators and the created creation.<br \/>\nWe are uniquely made to know it,<br \/>\nand it will swallow us in the end.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Physicists claim the universe is shaped like a soccer ball, and we are inside, with holograms coating the boundaries,\u00a0 projecting all possible angles of view, individual and complete like Indra\u2019s net.
