{"id":56425,"date":"2019-06-23T04:57:27","date_gmt":"2019-06-23T08:57:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=56425"},"modified":"2019-06-23T04:59:23","modified_gmt":"2019-06-23T08:59:23","slug":"between-20-and-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2019\/06\/between-20-and-21\/","title":{"rendered":"Between 20 and 21"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cYou rest; I\u2019ll pray,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A friend told me the other day.<\/p>\n<p>Four simple words,<\/p>\n<p>And I\u2019m reduced to tears.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Because, for so long<\/p>\n<p>I thought I must be strong<\/p>\n<p>And stay awake<\/p>\n<p>And pray for God to hear.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The cries of so much subtle chaos<\/p>\n<p>Of which I am in charge,<\/p>\n<p>To not lay down my duties<\/p>\n<p>And the tasks I had at large.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But here my friend was saying,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo sleep; I will keep guard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo be at ease; You\u2019re not alone,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSoldier, I\u2019m on duty now\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And so, I laid my pack aside<\/p>\n<p>And I slept a deep, deep sleep<\/p>\n<p>And knew on my behalf,<\/p>\n<p>Between my friend and God,<\/p>\n<p>There was nothing I need do.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing they wouldn\u2019t keep.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Aside: Here we are, before the Sun comes up, dragging ourselves through. Imagine if another poet said this to you&#8230;You sleep; I&#8217;ll write.
