Once on the Interstate in downtown Atlanta<\/p>\n

I saw a goose — a beautiful Canada goose —<\/p>\n

trapped against the concrete barrier<\/p>\n

that separated North from South.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I saw him in a blur<\/p>\n

as I whizzed by at 80.<\/p>\n

Alive, terrified, he pressed himself as far<\/p>\n

from the traffic as he could.<\/p>\n

There were so many cars —<\/p>\n

there wasn’t room for him to stand up,<\/p>\n

to fly, and he must have been hurt<\/p>\n

or he wouldn’t have been there at all.<\/p>\n

I think of him still sometimes<\/p>\n

though it was years ago now.<\/p>\n

I wonder now long it took<\/p>\n

for him to die in terror.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

All he wanted was<\/p>\n
