A faint mist of vaporous emotion wettens the eyes<\/p>\n
As he tells me about a Fernando Garcia.<\/p>\n
Hadn’t seen him in years<\/p>\n
Had him listed as an emergency contact.<\/p>\n
An awful, random tragedy<\/p>\n
That he’ll never mention again<\/p>\n
That probably never existed.<\/p>\n
Yet he speaks with an enthusiasm, a force<\/p>\n
Charisma that makes me want to believe..<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
But the words don’t match the facts<\/p>\n
Don’t even match the other, earlier words.<\/p>\n
His actions never hear the promises he makes.<\/p>\n
And if I call him on it?<\/p>\n
A fresh, angrier lie.<\/p>\n
But the intent is always the same,<\/p>\n
Sob stories, rants, and mea culpae<\/p>\n
all hide one wish behind them:<\/p>\n
“Give me a pass.”<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Can’t meet his eyes as he tells me<\/p>\n
he’s going to see Fernando’s mother.<\/p>\n
Slowly, sadly, I shake my head,<\/p>\n
Grieving truth and trust.<\/p>\n
But not Fernando.<\/p>\n
