You decide<\/p>\n
Was it privilege or pride?<\/p>\n
Poverty or prosperity?<\/p>\n
Let’s look inside and see.<\/p>\n
In 1924<\/p>\n
Little Grace entered Life’s door.<\/p>\n
Tiny father<\/p>\n
Tiny mother<\/p>\n
Six sisters<\/p>\n
Six brothers<\/p>\n
All were giants in her eyes.<\/p>\n
Her life became bigger, to their surprise<\/p>\n
She didn’t like school<\/p>\n
Often broke the rules<\/p>\n
But she had important goals<\/p>\n
A child selling onions, radishes door to door<\/p>\n
Many doors slammed on the girl who looked poor<\/p>\n
One needed cash<\/p>\n
To build her stash<\/p>\n
Books and words she treasured<\/p>\n
By them, a life she measured<\/p>\n
Poetry, novels, all the great ones<\/p>\n
Masters of wordplay and puns<\/p>\n
She wrote her first story<\/p>\n
A twelve-year-old writer! Oh, glory!<\/p>\n
So many mouths to feed, poor father<\/p>\n
So much love to give, dear mother<\/p>\n
Little Grace, raised in the Word,<\/p>\n
Longed to teach children what she had heard<\/p>\n
And a teacher she became<\/p>\n
Students around the world would know her name.<\/p>\n
She’d write many more stories in her life and others<\/p>\n
For rescuing students who failed,<\/p>\n
Parents would offer praise and regale<\/p>\n
Grace grew big in the eyes of the learned<\/p>\n
They called her to travel, not spurn it<\/p>\n
Her route to this honored place<\/p>\n
Cost much in the life of Grace<\/p>\n
She left her mark on me that remains<\/p>\n
Which is why I pen these simple refrains<\/p>\n
