{"id":62319,"date":"2020-06-27T09:47:24","date_gmt":"2020-06-27T13:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=62319"},"modified":"2020-07-01T15:32:14","modified_gmt":"2020-07-01T19:32:14","slug":"maybelle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2020\/06\/maybelle\/","title":{"rendered":"Maybelle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I come by my radical feminism<br \/>\nhonestly<br \/>\nas scrupulously as can a<br \/>\nmiddle-aged guy like me<\/p>\n<p>I come from a long line of<br \/>\nstrong women<br \/>\nimmigrants<br \/>\noccupation resistors<br \/>\npogrom survivors<br \/>\nGreat Depression<br \/>\nscrappers and savers<br \/>\nwho made do<br \/>\nand much more<\/p>\n<p>blue-collar unionists<br \/>\norganizers<br \/>\nwomen who didn\u2019t back down<br \/>\noffice workers<br \/>\noutside-the-homers<br \/>\nwhen that supposedly<br \/>\nwas not \u2018the norm\u2019<\/p>\n<p>One, my mother\u2019s aunt<br \/>\na suffragette<br \/>\nclear sense, fifty years<br \/>\nremoved from the fight<br \/>\nto vote<br \/>\nhow the battle still raged<\/p>\n<p>honest in that her status<br \/>\nwife of a doctor<br \/>\nafforded her a bit more<br \/>\nleeway<br \/>\nthan many peers<br \/>\nshe fought, led the charge<br \/>\nwhen needed<\/p>\n<p>She always conveyed<br \/>\ninordinate sense<br \/>\nnot-boastful dignity, pride<br \/>\ngranted same to those<br \/>\nprobably<br \/>\nfar less deserving<\/p>\n<p>instilling in subsequent<br \/>\ngenerations<br \/>\nclear ideas about forging<br \/>\none\u2019s own path<br \/>\nwith the worth and dignity<br \/>\nof others<br \/>\nalways at the forefront<\/p>\n<p>As a teen I was enthralled by<br \/>\nher storytelling<br \/>\nthe resolve of others<br \/>\nsharing what she had fought for<br \/>\noccasionally punctuating a<br \/>\nkey point with a sharp \u2018thump\u2019<br \/>\nof her ever-present cane<\/p>\n<p>it was the 70s<br \/>\nWomen\u2019s Lib buzzwords<br \/>\nwere of less interest than real<br \/>\naction, in-the-streets<br \/>\nvisibility, protests<br \/>\nall still intrigued her<br \/>\nbra-burning bemused her<br \/>\nstreets full of people<br \/>\nmarching shoulder-to-shoulder<br \/>\nstill a turn-on<\/p>\n<p>always reminding her daughters<br \/>\nand my mother<br \/>\nplus shirttail-nephew me too<br \/>\nnot to let their guard down<br \/>\nkeep fighting<br \/>\nwherever, whenever<\/p>\n<p>I am nearly<br \/>\nfifty years removed from<br \/>\nthose days of being awed by<br \/>\naunt Maybelle<br \/>\nregaled by tales<br \/>\neach fascinating, each with<br \/>\na solid moral<br \/>\nlife lessons<br \/>\nearned not learned<\/p>\n<p>Schooled, I was<br \/>\nin every sense<br \/>\nfirsthand, no less<br \/>\nby a woman who had<br \/>\nseen much<br \/>\ndid something about it<br \/>\nwhenever she could<br \/>\nnudging me in<br \/>\nsimilar directions<\/p>\n<p>aunt Maybelle<br \/>\ninstilled in me a sense of<br \/>\nresponsibility<br \/>\ndidn\u2019t let me off the hook<br \/>\njust for being a boy<br \/>\nlong before<br \/>\nmale accountability<br \/>\nwas truly fashionable<\/p>\n<p>My kids<br \/>\ndaughter, two sons<br \/>\nnow grown<br \/>\nnever met aunt Maybelle<br \/>\nbut I see her in them<\/p>\n<p>involved activists, in their<br \/>\nown. unique ways<br \/>\napples, they are<br \/>\nfrom a distant branch of a tree<br \/>\nthat won\u2019t let them fall<br \/>\ntoo far away <\/p>\n<p>and, in fact<br \/>\nhelps them to soar<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> \u2013 Mark L.
