The School Teacher<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The cards came mostly at Christmas\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

but sometimes on her birthday\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

or random other times of the year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At Christmas there were fat, jolly Santas\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

or Currier and Ives\u2019 prints reminiscent\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

of the school where they had been with her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The letters told of their successes,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

frequently clips from newspapers\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

called the Weekly Herald or\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The EveryDay News with a picture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u2019d look at those, sometimes\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

touch the face, maybe say,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201che lost his hair\u201d or \u201cshe\u2019s as beautiful\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

as her mother.\u201d Sometimes the florist\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

would deliver a Poinsettia\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

or a vase of cut flowers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There was always news\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

of their families and maybe\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

a family picture. Opened on arrival,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

she read these missives,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

folded the contents back\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

into the envelopes\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and rubber-banded the lot\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

together with a note to herself\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

on top. \u201cDidn\u2019t hear from Martin\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

this year or Marian got a new job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

These were their stories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The stories of the people\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

whose lives she had helped\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

to shape and how they now fit into society.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
