As a woman, for the most part<\/p>\n
I have been a failure.<\/p>\n
This judgement, by itself<\/p>\n
Evidence of years of self-inflicted terrorism<\/p>\n
Against my own sex.<\/p>\n
So when you ask me now<\/p>\n
To praise on this page a woman of influence<\/p>\n
I draw a blank.<\/p>\n
Instead, I could provide an internal examination<\/p>\n
X-rays of cuts and bruises to my sense of self<\/p>\n
Probing for some latent feminism<\/p>\n
Free-floating and occasionally attaching to cells<\/p>\n
But stopping short of penetrating that last layer of skin.<\/p>\n
If I asked these women, would they say the same?<\/p>\n
How much damage had been done to them<\/p>\n
And how much more by their own acquiescence<\/p>\n
To a norm they did not invent<\/p>\n
Until their DNA, programmed to remain silent<\/p>\n
Took up arms, forced to the surface by rage.<\/p>\n
But they were more courageous than me.<\/p>\n
My praise is jealousy<\/p>\n
