{"id":65541,"date":"2020-06-27T13:29:16","date_gmt":"2020-06-27T17:29:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=65541"},"modified":"2020-06-27T13:29:16","modified_gmt":"2020-06-27T17:29:16","slug":"metaphoric-to-sink-your-teeth-into","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2020\/06\/metaphoric-to-sink-your-teeth-into\/","title":{"rendered":"Metaphoric to Sink Your Teeth Into"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Metaphoric to Sink Your Teeth Into<\/p>\n<p>A friend recently said<br \/>\npoetry is like a tube of toothpaste.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s it, that\u2019s all he said.<\/p>\n<p>I told a friend that this friend<br \/>\nsaid this about poetry<br \/>\nand she said, that\u2019s ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps, but I get it.<br \/>\nOnce poetry is squeezed out,<br \/>\nyou can\u2019t put it back.<\/p>\n<p>Once a person writes a poem<br \/>\nthey become a poet.<br \/>\nOnce a poet, always a poet.<\/p>\n<p>Once a poem is read,<br \/>\nyou can\u2019t pack it back up<br \/>\nand shove it into the tube.<\/p>\n<p>No cramming your words<br \/>\nback in when they are set free<br \/>\nspread wings and fly.<\/p>\n<p>And, anyway, why would you want<br \/>\nto stifle inspiration, flavored and<br \/>\nfluorided to prevent gingivitis.<\/p>\n<p>Next time you hold that tube<br \/>\nin your hands, think about how<br \/>\nyour words will be minty fresh,<\/p>\n<p>your verses scrubbed to remove tartar<br \/>\nof dull words and lackluster images,<br \/>\nsimiles like a bright shiny smile, and<\/p>\n<p>promote oral hygiene, reduce the plaque<br \/>\nof quotes that plague your epigraphs<br \/>\nwith common clich\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Next time you squeeze that tube,<br \/>\nimagine newbie poems waiting to fill<br \/>\nyour mouth and mind with dentrific brilliance.<\/p>\n<p>~ J R Turek<br \/>\nJune 27, 2020<br \/>\nHour 5<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Metaphoric to Sink Your Teeth Into A friend recently said poetry is like a tube of toothpaste.
