Both of us knelt by the boat,
\nand ensured the light – using our last two batteries –
\nwould stay fixed.
\nMy knees, already scraped by the rocks when I washed
\nout your shirt,
\nnearly buckled
\nas I rose up too fast
\nand simultaneously felt dizzy,
\nan electrified scarecrow on
\nthe shore of sustenance
\nor oblivion.<\/p>\n

You caught me
\nand smiled.
\n“They’ll see our campfire from here.”<\/p>\n

Too tired to argue
\nwhether “they” were on our side
\nor not,
\nI said nothing,
\nbut looked out at a night
\ntoo beautiful to believe
\nwe weren’t simply
