Genius At Work<\/p>\n
My desk is littered with lists
\ndo this by then, that before when,
\nremember this, don\u2019t forget that
\nand when I need to find the thing
\nthat is chomping at my to-do clock,
\nthat thing I know I need to do now,
\nthe thing I can\u2019t remember what
\nmaybe even why, I can\u2019t find it.<\/p>\n
Scraps of paper stack up in wild piles
\na Jenga game gone wrong from the start;
\nwhen I sweep them up to neaten them,
\ntowers topple, pages take wing, fly
\nto freedom under\/behind the bookcase
\nor line the floor like errant throw rugs
\nwith verse fragments written on them,
\npoetic lines to find a place for, grocery
\nlists from last month.<\/p>\n
I get distracted by too-small scripted words
\nthat mimic extinct birds flying overhead,
\nscrawled words with exclamation marks,
\nclouds and stars signaling their hierarchy
\non the wow-write-this-now-scale,
\nor hieroglyphics of pyramid proportions
\nthat keep me inspired for hours, writing
\nabout what I think I was jotting down
\nbut most times just writing and writing.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m a list maker, no reforming me.
\nI never toss them, they span decades
\nof do this and I didn\u2019t, go there before
\nand I missed it, don\u2019t forget and I did.
\nMy friend tells me to use a calendar
\nto jot down important dates and info but
\nI have yet to find a calendar with boxes
\nbig enough to hold the reams of written-
\non stacks that keep my desk useful.<\/p>\n
