Then when opened,<\/p>\n<p>a surprise that makes us happy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>COVID-19 is a surprise.<\/p>\n<p>It is round with flower-like<\/p>\n<p>petals and triangular protrusions<\/p>\n<p>Though it doesn&#8217;t make us happy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I remember the polio vaccine,<\/p>\n<p>and the long line we waited<\/p>\n<p>in that trailed outside Finch<\/p>\n<p>grade school and down<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>the block. We drank tiny vials<\/p>\n<p>filled with serum to keep us<\/p>\n<p>well. Now the surprise is the<\/p>\n<p>number of new COVID cases.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The season won&#8217;t be over<\/p>\n<p>until the vials arrive, delicate<\/p>\n<p>glass with a potent fluid made<\/p>\n<p>especial to foil the surprise.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gifts sparkle, shake, and rattle.
