It all began with a whimper,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

a bang never came into it<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Together out of a bad habit,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

like smoking behind the bike sheds.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The committee of their mutual friends,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

had decried describing the entire relationship<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

as a waste of vitriol.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There was excitement,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

in between the arms of the bony couch<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

now and again.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The rest of the time the <\/span>dragged out<\/span> pauses and silences,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

neither comfortable nor itchy<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

they were just something that left a taste in their mouths.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The only thing that made it feel anywhere right,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

was in the fact it was all so wrong.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

he looked at her over some cold toast<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She spied him from inside a hungover head,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

the kitchen radio did its best<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

to distract itself from the empty hearted goings on.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He thought it would be cold funny<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If their song suddenly came on.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The odd bit of sex they still had\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

did nothing but remind them how rare it was.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He had a drawer half full of Dear Johns\u2019 he never got up the nerve to send<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

because to be in a relationship at all, well that beats the loneliness to bed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She sometimes practiced speeches to herself,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

she hadn\u2019t the self to deliver<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

but kept running laps round her head.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Maybe next year would be better.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
