{"id":68602,"date":"2020-06-27T17:16:50","date_gmt":"2020-06-27T21:16:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=68602"},"modified":"2020-06-27T17:17:09","modified_gmt":"2020-06-27T21:17:09","slug":"the-speck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2020\/06\/the-speck\/","title":{"rendered":"The Speck"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The path from the cottage<br \/>\nto the seaside<br \/>\nis usually quiet<br \/>\nand solitary.<\/p>\n<p>But today<br \/>\na boy sits on the grass<br \/>\nwatching me.<\/p>\n<p>I start as a speck<br \/>\ngetting larger in the distance<br \/>\nand I see him<br \/>\na speck on the grass<br \/>\nmorphing into a boy<br \/>\nsitting in the rain<br \/>\nwaiting for my speck to pass.<\/p>\n<p>I nod and say hello.<br \/>\nMy voice too loud and sudden and coarse<br \/>\nin the stillness of the drizzle.<\/p>\n<p>He nods and says good morning<br \/>\nquietly<br \/>\nas if to not disturb the llamas<br \/>\nstanding in the fields<\/p>\n<p>Did you know they hum when they are happy?<br \/>\nDo you hum when you are happy?<\/p>\n<p>I want to ask<br \/>\nto spill out all the words welling and bubbling up<br \/>\nso many questions<br \/>\nbut they stay bottled up<br \/>\nunable to escape the room inside<br \/>\nwhere they are kept safe<br \/>\nfrom embarrassment<br \/>\nfrom hurt<br \/>\nfrom closeness<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s just the two of us on this island path<\/p>\n<p>Two specks<br \/>\none passing the other<br \/>\non the line to nowhere<\/p>\n<p>Will you be there when I return?<\/p>\n<p>The question hangs strange<br \/>\nin the heavy air<br \/>\nas my speck disappears from your speck.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The path from the cottage to the seaside is usually quiet and solitary.
