{"id":69979,"date":"2020-06-27T19:54:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-27T23:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=69979"},"modified":"2020-06-27T19:54:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-27T23:54:00","slug":"2020-marathon-hour-11-the-right-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2020\/06\/2020-marathon-hour-11-the-right-thing\/","title":{"rendered":"2020 Marathon Hour 11 &#8211; The Right Thing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It can be moral, ethical,<br \/>\nkind, and decent.<br \/>\nGenerous and honest.<br \/>\nAnd it can still suck.<\/p>\n<p>It can be costly, scary,<br \/>\nhard and ugly,<br \/>\nagonizing and vulnerable.<br \/>\nAnd it can be right.<\/p>\n<p>They warn you that right isn&#8217;t always easy.<\/p>\n<p>No good deed goes unpunished, after all.<\/p>\n<p>But how many ways it comes at you:<br \/>\nLost friends, alienated relatives,<br \/>\nbullying, backlash, bitching,<br \/>\nstress, anxiety, doxxing,<br \/>\nbeatings, lynchings, arson,<br \/>\nlost opportunities,<br \/>\na life measurably more difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe they should emphasize that a little more.<\/p>\n<p>Just finding the right thing can be messy<br \/>\nMinefield messy, with a side of timebomb.<br \/>\nThe Law of Shared Space:<br \/>\nWith two or more sets of feet, sooner or later<br \/>\nSomeone&#8217;s toes are getting stepped on.<br \/>\nThe Law of Schedules:<br \/>\nWith two or more sets of priorities, sooner or later,<br \/>\nSomeone&#8217;s not going to be where they&#8217;re wanted.<br \/>\nThe Law of Action:<br \/>\nIf you don&#8217;t make a choice, you lose.<\/p>\n<p>Good people get hurt no matter what you choose.<\/p>\n<p>Even taking all the pain yourself doesn&#8217;t just make it right.<br \/>\nBecause you&#8217;re probably a good person, too.<br \/>\nIf you&#8217;re worried about doing the right thing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It can be moral, ethical, kind, and decent.
