It was still in the cottage<br \/>\nnext to the half-eaten bowl of porridge<br \/>\nand bottle of fresh cream<br \/>\nfrom the farmer next door.<\/p>\n<p>Nice man, that farmer.<br \/>\nYoung. A widower seemingly desperate<br \/>\nfor the company of his next wife.<br \/>\nIt wouldn\u2019t be me, but I was down<br \/>\nfor an evening by the fire pit<br \/>\nwith his home-spun ginger beer.<\/p>\n<p>He warned me about a strange cat<br \/>\nafter inviting me to dance with him<br \/>\nand the fireflies that evening.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s firefly season in these parts,\u201d<br \/>\nhe boasted. \u201cMy wife and I made an event of it,<br \/>\nuntil that dang cat got to her. Demon cat it was. Black as night.\u201d<br \/>\nA fleeting rage crossed his face before he smiled,<br \/>\nproud of the fresh cream.<\/p>\n<p>I never expected to encounter the creature<br \/>\nthat afternoon, and I must admit, she was beautiful.<br \/>\nA black mask framed her yellow eyes,<br \/>\nmaking them pop like diamonds.<br \/>\nI would swear I saw a menacing smile<br \/>\nbefore she leapt forward to attack.<\/p>\n<p>BOOM! The cat fell to the ground with a screech<br \/>\nthat surely was from the depths of hell,<br \/>\nlike nothing I\u2019d ever heard. A rustling to my left<br \/>\nsuddenly made me more scared than had the cat.<\/p>\n<p>BOOM! I thought she was dead,<br \/>\nbut the cat had, miraculously, gotten up<br \/>\nbefore the farmer could get another clear shot at her.<\/p>\n<p>Demon cat indeed!<br \/>\nShe seemed to fly back into the dark forest<br \/>\nthrough trees, vines, and ferns,<br \/>\nas if they weren\u2019t there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHold on just a minute so I can check for blood,\u201d<br \/>\nHe wasn\u2019t talking about my blood, but that of the cat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know I hit him, but I never can find nothing to track him,\u201d<br \/>\nhe said, puzzled. \u201cI hear him scream, but it\u2019s like I hit his<br \/>\ndark soul, and not his mortal body. You saw him, didn\u2019t you,<br \/>\nthat black cat with the yellow eyes. Same one that got my wife.<br \/>\nI had a hunch he\u2019d be after you,<br \/>\nso I came to see if I could get a shot at him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I must have been in a state of shock,<br \/>\nnot having realized how close I had come to<br \/>\nsome sort of immortal death.<br \/>\nIt took me until just this week to wrap my head around<br \/>\nwhat he said next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy wife is still out there somewhere, I know it.<br \/>\nI see her from time to time, wearing the same ochre colored dress<br \/>\nand the white socks I\u2019d given her for Christmas,<br \/>\nAnd those godawful white ear muffs, made her look like she had<br \/>\ngiant balls of cotton wrapped around her ears.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>She watched from the treeline in the heat of that summer evening, a strange ochre colored beast with cotton ears and short front legs \u2013 white, like she was wearing stockings.
