Amongst her sea of long black hair<\/p>\n
A tiny white gleam stares me down<\/p>\n
With eyes of wild green, she stares with such intensity<\/p>\n
For a few minutes, our hearts beat in sync<\/p>\n
Then hers starts to growing smaller and smaller<\/p>\n
The roof of the bus winks at us over the trees<\/p>\n
We were near<\/p>\n
“It’s okay, darling”<\/p>\n
Her mouth trembles and the words fall from her wrinkled lips<\/p>\n
“It’s okay”<\/p>\n
I know what she is asking of me<\/p>\n
But I won’t<\/p>\n
Returning my attention back to the trail<\/p>\n
Ignoring her requests<\/p>\n
Our destination remains visible among the stunted trees<\/p>\n
We’re almost there<\/p>\n
Her pace diminishes quickly<\/p>\n
Despite her telling me it’s okay<\/p>\n
It does not feel so<\/p>\n
I envelop her in my arms and push forward<\/p>\n
Wild eyes blinking crystal clear tears<\/p>\n
More white hairs pop out in surreal time<\/p>\n
I tell her “It’s okay”<\/p>\n
She fashions a peaceful, toothy grin<\/p>\n
Her heartbeat falls out of sync with mine<\/p>\n
