 <\/p>\n

When they\u2019re the size of a quarter<\/p>\n

You can\u2019t sex turtles<\/p>\n

So she\u2019s been named Josh all her life<\/p>\n

That\u2019s thirty-two years now<\/p>\n

Some of them better than others<\/p>\n

Thanks to my financial highs and lows<\/p>\n

And my understanding of turtle nutrition<\/p>\n

She went to college with me<\/p>\n

I joke that Josh is prob\u2019ly the only RES with a BA<\/p>\n

I built her a horse-trough pond in the back yard<\/p>\n

With fencing around & above to keep out osprey<\/p>\n

Because she\u2019s a girl, she\u2019s large<\/p>\n

But still\u2026<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This spring, she produced an egg<\/p>\n

No boy turtles involved<\/p>\n

No winter hibernation beforehand<\/p>\n

No special foods introduced to her diet<\/p>\n

You can imagine my surprise<\/p>\n

I dove into pet-turtle-owner panic<\/p>\n

Of course\u2026<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How much calcium should I now add to her daily intake?<\/p>\n

How much more UV light does she now require?<\/p>\n

Why on Earth did she wait until 2020 to do this?<\/p>\n

Or maybe it\u2019s because of 2020<\/p>\n

I mean\u2026<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Knowing the egg to be infertile,<\/p>\n

I scooped it out and cleaned it up<\/p>\n

I shall display it in a shadow box<\/p>\n

Proudly\u2026<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Because my Joshua laid an egg.<\/p>\n
