Hour 17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A MONUMENT TO EPHEMERAL FACTS<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My father gave me a beautiful poster print<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">from his tool and dye shop at Xerox<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">when I was a senior in high school<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">picturing colorful hardcover books stacked in a pyramid<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and beneath this obelisk an epitaph:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cA Monument To Ephemeral Facts\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was beautiful, and I was offended<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The same way I was offended by the Nook reader<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not one atom in my being desiring to trade<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the warm familiarity of turning pages<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for the cold clinical brightness of a tablet screen<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I was young then, but oh how certain I was<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that I was a crone hag bent on traditional wildness<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">unwilling to trade any convenience for the magick of my tools<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the way, I\u2019m sure, 20th century writers clung to their manual typewriters<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">too aware that their woods was lacking in electrical outlets<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But I loved my library in those days<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">no matter how many flights of stairs I had to haul it up<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">no matter how many broken bookshelves needed replacing<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that was nearly a decade ago, maybe more<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">my hands lost count of the calendar pages<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and today I\u2019m a top floor treehouse girl<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My library fell away in chunks<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with only 5 small boxes of books to brave these stairs<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and damn, man, it was serious, 2020 has me in my 30s<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with all my druthers I\u2019d go back to 19 and tell me mean<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDon\u2019t be a Luddite, Bunny, an online library is fine<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">books are obsolete baby, give your back a break.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A MONUMENT TO EPHEMERAL FACTS &nbsp;
