In my old apartment\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

there was a silversmith<\/span><\/p>\n

who lived on the other side of the wall<\/span><\/p>\n

I would hear her tapping\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

hammer on silver and brass<\/span><\/p>\n

and admire her discipline<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Having been moved for some weeks<\/span><\/p>\n

she reached across neighborhoods<\/span><\/p>\n

and offered to work a bit of alchemy for me<\/span><\/p>\n

blending salts and mercury<\/span><\/p>\n

a game of transmutation\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cu + Zn = a summoning of\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

a golden sun breaking dawn\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

with dancing rays\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

a glory cutting into a silver sky<\/span><\/p>\n

She asked what spell should be inscribed<\/span><\/p>\n

what I chose to wear pressed<\/span><\/p>\n

against the skin just above the knuckle <\/span><\/p>\n

beside her maker\u2019s mark<\/span><\/p>\n

a stack of ore and stone reads<\/span><\/p>\n
