{"id":76809,"date":"2020-06-28T09:36:52","date_gmt":"2020-06-28T13:36:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=76809"},"modified":"2020-06-28T09:38:16","modified_gmt":"2020-06-28T13:38:16","slug":"that-keeps-on-giving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2020\/06\/that-keeps-on-giving\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8230;that keeps on giving?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a kid I made gifts for<br \/>\nspecial occasions<br \/>\nbirthdays, Christmas \u2013<br \/>\nparents, grandparents,<br \/>\naunt, uncle<br \/>\nhangers-on<br \/>\nall got something made<br \/>\nby my own two hands.<\/p>\n<p>for a few years it was<br \/>\nsomething acrylic<br \/>\nclear, encasing some<br \/>\nobject or picture deemed<br \/>\nworth of enshrinement<br \/>\nby me<br \/>\npoured into molds in our<br \/>\nbasement workshop<\/p>\n<p>One year, it was candles \u2013<br \/>\nall the rage in the \u201870s<br \/>\nI specialized in funky owls<\/p>\n<p>There was also my<br \/>\nbottle cutting phase \u2013 less<br \/>\nsuccessful, as goblets<br \/>\nmade from full size<br \/>\nwine bottles proved<br \/>\nunwieldy to drink from <\/p>\n<p>My main claim to<br \/>\ngift making and giving fame<br \/>\nwas courtesy of my handy<br \/>\ndandy rock tumbler<br \/>\ntie tacs, tie bars, broaches,<br \/>\near rings<br \/>\nI made them all from<br \/>\nbrightly polished<br \/>\ngranite and marble \u2013<br \/>\nsometimes even a nice, white<br \/>\nquartz<\/p>\n<p>jewelry not for the<br \/>\nfaint of heart<br \/>\nor small stature<br \/>\neven small chunks of<br \/>\ngranite<br \/>\nmade for<br \/>\nadventuresome earlobe<br \/>\ngymnastics<\/p>\n<p>An only child, my parents would<br \/>\nindulge my varied<br \/>\ncreative interest and impulses<br \/>\nand my family<br \/>\nand friends<br \/>\nwere the feigned-gratitude<br \/>\nrecipients.<\/p>\n<p>Never let it be said that<br \/>\nmy gifts came from anywhere<br \/>\nbut the heart<\/p>\n<p>And my basement.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2013 Mark L.
