I heard when a shark stops swimming<\/p>\n
it will drown and realized sitting still<\/p>\n
here in my own life, on this muted, sagging couch,<\/p>\n
scrolling my phone, the television blaring, I am grasping<\/p>\n
for air beneath the choices I make.<\/p>\n
Even happy that I am<\/p>\n
Not tying my shoes,<\/p>\n
or the morning air still swirls about without<\/p>\n
me breathing it in,<\/p>\n
the tree leaves sway solitary missing my<\/p>\n
thoughtful gaze.<\/p>\n
I settle further into that couch,<\/p>\n
the stress of papers and relationships<\/p>\n
submerge me,<\/p>\n
and\u00a0 carry me away from the light<\/p>\n
realistically still in my grasp.<\/p>\n
Not even waving but drowning,<\/p>\n
or clinging to a ray of hope<\/p>\n
that might save me<\/p>\n
but slowly, resignedly<\/p>\n
dropping down, unmoving, slumping still<\/p>\n
the dangerous creature I am,<\/p>\n
sinks to be with the other lifeless<\/p>\n
beings below<\/p>\n
thinking all the while<\/p>\n
I should just<\/p>\n
keep moving<\/p>\n
forward.<\/p>\n
