{"id":87928,"date":"2021-06-26T09:40:24","date_gmt":"2021-06-26T13:40:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=87928"},"modified":"2021-06-26T09:40:39","modified_gmt":"2021-06-26T13:40:39","slug":"hour-one-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/hour-one-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Hour One, 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hour One of 2021 Marathon<\/p>\n<p>In January 2021 I began the journey<br \/>\nhundreds of miles trekking in pilgrimage<br \/>\nto a virtual Santiago amid the small houses<br \/>\nof my safe community where invisible threats<br \/>\ncame into the very air we breathed.<\/p>\n<p>An e-route with guideposts and imagined sunflowers<br \/>\nalong with hundreds of miles opened before me<br \/>\nas I walked darkest mornings<br \/>\nwhen the owl perched in my front yard<br \/>\nharmonized with the train whistle miles away.<\/p>\n<p>The road continued<br \/>\nas I walked tired in the afternoons<br \/>\nfollowing students\u2019 queries and fears and hopes<br \/>\ntheir zoomed voices echoing odd harmonies<br \/>\nwith birds and barks of surrounding houses.<\/p>\n<p>A few evenings I walked a few more steps<br \/>\nas the sun shone upon iced winter roads,<br \/>\nmuddy spring parks, and now summer\u2019s opening fields.<br \/>\nToday no harmonies come from increasing traffic,<br \/>\ncrowded stores, drowned out animals\u2019 cries, my heart.<\/p>\n<p>One hundred final on this pilgrimage<br \/>\nnow open before me, and the ultimate arrival<br \/>\nwill take me back to my classrooms, into the chaos,<br \/>\nbuildings and streets busier and filled with people<br \/>\nclamoring with unsettled nerves and angst.<\/p>\n<p>My journey has been sad.<br \/>\nSteps upon steps were designed for intentional peace.<br \/>\nDiscovering stillness full of painful, tender unknowns,<br \/>\nI\u2019m older and wizened from the pivots and strains.<br \/>\nMiles remain as I finish this journey.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hour One of 2021 Marathon In January 2021 I began the journey hundreds of miles trekking in pilgrimage to a virtual Santiago amid the small houses of my safe community where invisible threats came into the very air we breathed.
