Questions Unanswered<\/p>\n
At least a dozen times a week
\nI will hold out my palm, something
\ngenerally plastic, mangled into
\nan odd shape, dented, mutilated
\nto a good degree, and yet it looks
\nfamiliar, and ask my husband,
\n\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n
He\u2019ll chuckle, look down at the floor
\nbefore examining this fabrication of
\nwonder, and ask the general population
\nof our home, \u201cWell, what is it? What
\nwas it? Who did this?\u201d No answers.
\nSix months ago, we would know
\nwho the culprit was,<\/p>\n
but now, we have two puppies,
\ntheir curiosity streaming all around
\nour home, enticing them to chew,
\ngnaw, steal anything left in their path.
\nWe blamed it on teething when
\nMunchkin, the older one, was young,
\nback when we counted his age in
\nweeks, not months.<\/p>\n
A floor tripping with toys, he would
\nhunt out a ball of yarn he\u2019d tear into,
\nor a pair of shoes left out of the closet \u2013
\nalways Paul\u2019s, never mine, or
\nhis favorite for treasures, the garbage pail.
\nNever fail, we\u2019d find some reshaped form
\nof something that was and would never
\nbe again.<\/p>\n
And now, 6 months later, we added
\nGumball to our family. Round and sweet,
\nhe lives up to his name, but he is ten times
\nmore resourceful than Munchkin. Taller
\nalready, he reaches tabletops and cubbies
\nnot meant for puppy access. He\u2019s also
\na bad influence; Munchkin has reverted
\nto chewing.<\/p>\n
So now, the \u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d question
\nexpands to \u201cWhat was it, where was it,
\nwho found it? Who did this?\u201d.
\nWe can only guess what the garbage men
\nmust think of the contents of our chewed-
\nup recycle bin.<\/p>\n
