\nWe have shared our thoughts and prayers

\nAs we search for signs of life
\nAmid the rubble
\nAmid the fire
\nAmid the water
\nAmid the storm
\nWe hope to wake up to good news
\nAs the bad news we last heard
\nAs we drifted to sleep lightly
\nHaunted our sleep
\nWe have no time
\nFor REM or deep sleep
\nCoffee barely prepares us
\nAs we stare into the tv void
\nThe preachers, priests, rabbis, imams
\nAre speechless beneath the glare
\nThey stutter to the rhythm of multi rhythmic
\nGun blasts in the distance getting closer
\nEach standing at a corner
\nOffering prayers to ward off danger
\nWe conjure thoughts of miracles
\nAs we search for signs of life
\nHoping our thoughts and prayers will lead to recovery
\nRather than acceptance of retrieval
\nOur thoughts run rampant
\nAnd crash over their prayers
\nAmong the sounds of thunderous steel and concrete crashing
\nAmong the sounds of multi rhythmic gunfire
\nI was thinking and praying for fireworks
\nI think I was misunderstood
\nBy the powers that grant wishes
\nOr answer to those who think and pray
\nFor something different or something better
\nNot just a better result
\nFor the last five millennia
\nWe have been haunted
\nBy the thoughts of prayers
\nOf others
\nI think as we wake up to a disturbed sleep
\nThat we have been deeply misunderstood.
\nOur ancestors traded tranquility
\nFor the ability
\nTo think and pray.
\nWe search for signs of life
\nAmong concrete and steel ruins
\nWith trained dogs
\nWho couldn\u2019t be happier
\nWe use robots
\nTo search for the sniper
\nHiding behind the wall
\nWe offer a solution
\nAn emulsion of thoughts and prayers
\nWe find ourselves humming to a multi rhythmic beat
\nOf gunfire and buildings falling
\nA modern song recorded by satellites
\nAnd played back on the 24 hour cycle of news
