{"id":91081,"date":"2021-06-27T04:06:56","date_gmt":"2021-06-27T08:06:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=91081"},"modified":"2021-06-27T04:08:51","modified_gmt":"2021-06-27T08:08:51","slug":"hour-19-a-self-portrait-after-adam-zagajewski","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/hour-19-a-self-portrait-after-adam-zagajewski\/","title":{"rendered":"Hour 19 &#8211; A Self Portrait After Adam Zagajewski"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A Self Portrait<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/poets.org\/poem\/self-portrait\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-v-197036e9=\"\">Adam Zagajewski<\/a> &#8211; <em>The frame I used is from his poem, and I have put them in italics.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><br \/>\nBetween<\/em> my cell phone, the kitchen, and my love seat<br \/>\n<em>half my day passes.<\/em> It is well past <em>half a century.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I live in<\/em> a land where Arabic is the language of<br \/>\nmusic and the streets.<br \/>\n<em>I listen<\/em> to the language&#8217;s songs, even though<br \/>\nI only catch an occasional meaning in the volley around me.<br \/>\n<em>I see<\/em> two sides battling for my inner life.<br \/>\n<em>I read<\/em> stories about faith and hope and life and love and I am nurtured.<br \/>\n<em>I like to<\/em> write poems and letters and blog posts that no one reads.<br \/>\n<em>Beside me<\/em> is my partner, faithful and true.<br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;m no longer<\/em> able to make my mark here, but I have passed the torch<br \/>\nand I am content and at peace.<br \/>\n<em>I like<\/em> a listening ear<br \/>\nand spicy milk tea.<br \/>\n<em>Sometimes <\/em>at the sea, the miniscule waves <em>speak to me<\/em> and I am comforted.<br \/>\n<em>I love <\/em>working with children as they learn, create, and find their voices.<br \/>\n<em>Every<\/em> Friday I eat baked salmon and have a day of rest.<br \/>\nI am not unaware of my privilege.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m truly not a child of the moon,<br \/>\nof which Mick Jagger sang,<br \/>\n<em>but a child of<\/em> the Son,<br \/>\n<em>and not all the<\/em> plans God has for me<br \/>\nare met in this <em>life that\u2014so far\u2014<br \/>\n<\/em>still <em>belongs to me.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><em>My country freed itself from one evil. I wish<\/em><br \/>\n<em>another liberation would follow.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Could I help in this?
