Our first adult house was built in ’41
\nand we lived in it for 23 years.
\nWe know little of the genealogy and stories
\nof the previous occupants of that address.
\nThat imaginary of the past didn’t seem to peak our interest,
\ndespite the occasional plastic action figure or
\nmiscellaneous mystery metal fragment buried in the backyard
\nor in the dirt cellar where the furnace lived.
\nDigging into that kind of bygone times
\nis not where our obsessive excavations take place.
\nPerhaps, it was the nazi sticker found on our side walkway,
\nor the pack of aggressive pit bulls
\nthat trampled our garden
\nor the large several dumpster size garbage heap
\nwith hawks perched on the fence
\nseeking out rats in our other neighbor’s yard
\nthat stilled whatever curiosity
