No one but Elders remember a time before The End
\nEven if it’s just been my beginning, my life;
\nSnuffed skies dominate horizons choked by smoke,
\nParticulate matter creating brilliant sunsets
\nWondering how forests still remain to burn
\nBut still humanity plods along,
\nSo I guess fact is stranger than fiction<\/p>\n
We were digging a fire pit when we found it
\nA small chest for keepsakes, of unknown origin
\nBut of course we found it here
\nLike ourselves, I guess that’s its story;
\nThe shovel dented the wood, but
\nThe damage was not severe,
\nUnlike what we’d done to the planet<\/p>\n
Inside: a save button from a word processor
\nBut physical and real, one of the Elders
\nCalled it a “floppy disc”… it wasn’t floppy
\nA photograph of a family, smiling;
\nHard to believe the sky really looked like that
\nHard to believe people could be so happy
\nHard to believe food was so plentiful<\/p>\n
We live well enough, but the Elders say
\nIt was as simple as “Going to the grocery store”
\nWhich was some kind of food library,
\nBut you didn’t have to bring anything back
\nAnd I wonder what secrets the save button holds
\nBut we don’t have a “floppy disc reader”
\nAnd I wonder why these items were buried<\/p>\n
Especially the can of beans…
\nPerhaps they thought ahead? Perhaps they knew
\nOf the carnage that would be unleashed
\nPerhaps the happy collection predicted that
\nSustenance would be hard to come by
\nAnd preserves would be the way forward
