{"id":92090,"date":"2021-06-26T14:32:09","date_gmt":"2021-06-26T18:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=92090"},"modified":"2021-06-26T14:36:59","modified_gmt":"2021-06-26T18:36:59","slug":"i-didnt-need-a-thesaurus-or-a-tool-in-my-self-care-kit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/i-didnt-need-a-thesaurus-or-a-tool-in-my-self-care-kit\/","title":{"rendered":"I Didn&#8217;t Need a Thesaurus, or A Tool in My Self-Care Kit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every day, I try to take at least ten thousand steps.<\/p>\n<p>Every hour, when I&#8217;m writing, I get up from my hard chair,<br \/>\nmeasure time with the clock<br \/>\nand the laps through the great room, down the long hall,<br \/>\nand back again.<br \/>\nThe scientist in me measures everything, including how many laps<br \/>\nin an hour.<\/p>\n<p>In the before time, there was a huge treadmill<br \/>\nfilling the space between the sitting area and kitchen.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s rumbling noise bothered the dogs and<br \/>\nmade it hard for the man to listen to the television<br \/>\nas I let the machine do the counting, miles,<br \/>\nmiles per hour, the daily hour<br \/>\nwhile I read from the tablet in front of me.<\/p>\n<p>I read a lot of books that way, carving out time<br \/>\nfor two tools in my self-care kit.<\/p>\n<p>Then, when everything shut down,<br \/>\nwhen I had more time than ever,<br \/>\nthe treadmill quit.<br \/>\nJust like that.<br \/>\nI ordered the mother board from Amazon,<br \/>\nbut we never got it set just right.<\/p>\n<p>We hauled the treadmill to the thrift store,<br \/>\nset it on the covered porch,<br \/>\nand drove away.<\/p>\n<p>The house felt bigger.<br \/>\nThere was space to move,<br \/>\nand I worked out my route.<\/p>\n<p>I had less time to read,<br \/>\nbut more time to think.<\/p>\n<p>Today, in the sixth hour of writing,<br \/>\nI measure my laps<br \/>\nbefore sitting to write again,<br \/>\nand guess what the prompt is,<br \/>\nwhat I&#8217;m to write about.<br \/>\nTell me without saying the word.<br \/>\nYour turn.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every day, I try to take at least ten thousand steps.
