{"id":93158,"date":"2021-06-26T15:55:04","date_gmt":"2021-06-26T19:55:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=93158"},"modified":"2021-06-26T15:55:04","modified_gmt":"2021-06-26T19:55:04","slug":"trying-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/trying-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Trying Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Trying Out<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We stood on the front lawn, a thick mass of grass<\/p>\n<p>spread before us like heaven unfurled.<\/p>\n<p>It was that beautiful a day, late summer.<\/p>\n<p>The day I wanted to be a cheerleader.<\/p>\n<p>We started with simple moves, cartwheels, headstands.<\/p>\n<p>Our backs arched, shoulders straight, pelvis tucked back.<\/p>\n<p>The day I wanted to be a cheerleader.<\/p>\n<p>I had obstacles to face: no flexibility (at age twelve)<\/p>\n<p>couldn&#8217;t do a cartwheel, let alone a flip or a headstand.<\/p>\n<p>I rode my bike home, lawns tidy squares, bushes clipped,<\/p>\n<p>small trees carrying heavy bunches of orange berries.<\/p>\n<p>The day I wanted to be a cheerleader.<\/p>\n<p>I practiced doing headstands in the living room,<\/p>\n<p>finally steading myself, my toes pointing at the ceiling<\/p>\n<p>until I crashed, bumping head with knee.
