{"id":93168,"date":"2021-06-26T15:38:22","date_gmt":"2021-06-26T19:38:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=93168"},"modified":"2021-06-26T15:38:22","modified_gmt":"2021-06-26T19:38:22","slug":"analyzing-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/analyzing-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Analyzing Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Analyzing Time<\/p>\n<p>I tell the students in my class<br \/>\nto sit quiet for one minute.<br \/>\nThey laugh; I tell them<br \/>\nit is harder than they think.<br \/>\nMore giggles, a few bravado jeers,<br \/>\nlittle indifference when I dare them.<\/p>\n<p>I set the timer on my desk. 1:00<br \/>\nand seconds tick off in metronome<br \/>\nprecision. At 15 seconds in, a few<br \/>\nfurtive whispers, some shushing<br \/>\nand quiet for less than 10 seconds.<br \/>\nMore whispers, less shushing,<br \/>\nlonger to quiet the room.<\/p>\n<p>I say nothing. At halfway,<br \/>\nthe room sounds like a row<br \/>\nof confessionals filled with<br \/>\nteenagers after prom weekend.<br \/>\nAt 45 seconds, the chats are louder,<br \/>\nmore frequent and does not abate<br \/>\nat the honor student\u2019s shushing.<\/p>\n<p>When the bell rings at 60 seconds,<br \/>\na collective sigh of relief plays tag<br \/>\nwith everyone in the room, including<br \/>\nme. This theory of time is hard<br \/>\nto teach, harder to learn, and yet<br \/>\nit amazes me every time.<\/p>\n<p>After dinner at home, I sit down<br \/>\nto check my email and promise<br \/>\nmyself only 15 minutes on Facebook.<br \/>\nTwo hours later, I log off, email<br \/>\nstill unchecked, my brain drained<br \/>\nof confidence that I am qualified<br \/>\nto teach on the subject of time.<\/p>\n<p>~ J R Turek<br \/>\nJune 26, 2021 Hour 7<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Analyzing Time I tell the students in my class to sit quiet for one minute.
