Eventually,<br \/>\nshe befriends the storekeepers<br \/>\nin her neighborhood. Mostly she<br \/>\nwalks the tributaries of the great<br \/>\nriver. She loves taking pictures with<br \/>\nher Polaroid camera. I, too, once had<br \/>\na Polaroid I was fond of. I read<br \/>\nthe first chapters ecstatically<br \/>\non a flight across country to<br \/>\nmeet my new granddaughter. On my<br \/>\nreturn flight, picking up where<br \/>\nI left off, the book had suddenly<br \/>\nhit the doldrums. Who changed?<br \/>\nThe author? the reader? Perhaps<br \/>\nthe novel&#8217;s milieu didn&#8217;t reward<br \/>\nthe woman&#8217;s explorations with<br \/>\nany intimacy. In any case, my<br \/>\ninterest returned and I finished<br \/>\nthe book.
