After being friends
\nSince childhood
\nAfter your boyfriend
\nCaught you
\nWith another guy
\nJust after he brought up the possibility of marriage
\nAnd told you he could no longer be with you,
\nAnd you agreed he just wasn\u2019t capable of keeping up with you.
\nWe would talk for hours
\nUsually on the phone
\nYou would tell me your thoughts
\nDeconstructing what was right
\nAnd wrong
\nAbout him
\nAbout you
\nAbout the two of you together.
\nWhen we were together
\nEveryone thought we would make a great couple
\nThey never understood why we were not a \u201cwe.\u201d
\nWe never acted on it.
\nWe kept our emotional distance
\nWe thought it better to remain friends
\nAnd we talked for hours about right and wrong
\nOne night after a few drinks
\nYou invited me in
\nAnd we finally perfected our relationship
\nElevating from friendship.
\nSince then you have
\nAvoided seeing me
\nWhile seeing other guys
\nBut we continue talking on the phone
\nWhere we engage in lengthy conversations
\nOne night I brought up the subject of us
\nYou agreed that is okay with you
\nThat I am in love with you
\nAnd that perhaps you loved me
\nOr could love me
\nOr might be in love with me in some way.
\nBut after that you continued going out
\nLetting them buy you drinks
\nFinally finishing with one more one night stand
\nOur friends think we would make a great couple
\nThough you are extroverted
\nAnd I don\u2019t get out much.
\nI am a classic introvert.
\nYou texted me recently
\nWith a photograph
\nOf you topless on the beach
\nWith a guy in the background
\nHardened in his speedo bikini suit
\nBringing you a drink
\nI don\u2019t know if we are playing games,
\nPretending we are playing tag
\nOr something more or less
\nI would like to get on the same page
\nAnd tell everyone it is no or yes
\nI am tired of guessing.
\nI know you are very good at telling me
\nHow you feel and what you believe is the truth
\nYou show me often your ability
\nTo understand people and their motives
\nBut when it comes to us
\nYou want me to guess.
\nI don\u2019t know if you think
\nI will outlast this phase
\n(one that I am going through?
\nOr one that you are going through?)
\nUntil you are ready to settle down
\nOr if you think you will find someone better.
\nAnd if I asked you for just another night of fun
