{"id":94807,"date":"2021-06-26T17:55:21","date_gmt":"2021-06-26T21:55:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=94807"},"modified":"2021-06-26T20:27:43","modified_gmt":"2021-06-27T00:27:43","slug":"studying-the-book-of-kells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/studying-the-book-of-kells\/","title":{"rendered":"STUDYING THE BOOK OF KELLS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If there is any holy book so close<br \/>\nto embodying poetry, it is the Book of Kells,<br \/>\nthat sacred collection of the four Gospels,<br \/>\nat least those agreed on by Mother Church,<br \/>\nwho is not my mother, its God not my God.<\/p>\n<p>The Book, though, is worth more than twice<br \/>\nits weight in gold, filled with the richest<br \/>\nof illuminations, mystical figures, symbols,<br \/>\nall any &#8216;God&#8217; might desire, and any demon, too.<br \/>\nMade by men who prayed, for men who coveted,<\/p>\n<p>as possession was more important than devotion,<br \/>\nand he who held it wished only to keep it<br \/>\nfor himself, to exhibit it with pride to<br \/>\nthose who could not read, who believed that<br \/>\n&#8216;God&#8217; was exalted, everlasting, and impartial,<\/p>\n<p>and that it was &#8216;His&#8217; hand that calligraphed<br \/>\nthe letters, guided the brushes of the monks,<br \/>\nstretched and purified the vellum.  Anyone<br \/>\nwho turned its pages became holy, but the Book<br \/>\nitself is modest, venerable, and hidden.<\/p>\n<p>There is nothing like religion to divide<br \/>\neverything that can be found under the sky.<br \/>\nThe Book of Kells may be admired but not<br \/>\ntouched, venerated but not read.
