The Holidays<\/p>\n
My family sits all around
\nas I begin to open my presents
\nanother year older and yet
\ntwo more steps behind<\/p>\n
“When will you get married?”
\n“Why are you studying English?”
\n“How do you expect to make a living?”
\n“Writing won’t pay the bills.”<\/p>\n
When did such a beautiful time
\nbecome such a nightmare?
\nI always seem to be the butt of the jokes
\nevery holiday season<\/p>\n
“Right now, I am focusing on me.”
\n“I love English that’s why.”
\n“I’ll figure it out, I always do.”
\n“It keeps me alive, doesn’t it?”<\/p>\n
Isn’t the holiday supposed to be
\na time of joy?
\nMaybe, I am the reason it isn’t
