Zoom Frequent Flyer Miles<\/p>\n
I\u2019m a world traveler, learning time zones
\nand date changes before\/after midnight.
\nI zoom from poetry events to writing
\nseminars and workshops; I\u2019ve even
\ngone to a baking class, and all from
\nmy desk chair.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve booked more miles
\nin virtual time than in real time.
\nOne Saturday afternoon, errands
\ndone early, I zoomed into Dallas
\nat 3pm my time for a live event with
\nJoy Harjo, the US Poet Laureate, so
\ninspiring; then at 4pm, I raced off to
\nRiverhead, a town on the east end of
\nLong Island that I\u2019ve been to once maybe
\ntwice in my lifetime as a Long Islander,
\nand so glad I got there virtually, so good;
\ntwo hours later, a quick click off to Boston
\nbefore they locked the Zoom door at 6:15pm
\nand lucky to be the last open mic after
\nterrific features. I click off at 7:55pm,
\nrefill my vodka tonic and make a run for it
\nto zoom to Kansas for a book launch for
\na midwest poet laureate I read with
\na few years back when he visited Long Island.<\/p>\n
5,330 miles in 6 hours; no plane tickets,
\nno airport drive, no rent-a-car or hotel room,
\nno bad road food, no taxi\/uber\/bus, no lines,
\nno waiting, no way I could it without Zoom.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve been to several stops in Britain,
\nto Amsterdam, so many United States,
\nI\u2019ve lost track. A few stops, I didn\u2019t know
\nwhere I was and it didn\u2019t matter. It was all
\namazing. I\u2019ve made friends, kept several,
\nbeen inspired, delivered inspiration, spent
\nquality time with kindred spirits and
\nfrom a sideways perspective, I am grateful
\nfor the pandemic for these experiences.
\nI\u2019m hooked, zooming from now until
\nmidnight my time forever.<\/p>\n
