St Patrick\u2019s Day Gumboot War<\/p>\n
I am not in the habit
\nOf using words I don\u2019t know
\nThis list includes single syllable
\nAnd multi syllabic words
\nI have a decent vocabulary
\nAnd understand words in context
\nPassive knowledge
\nI do my best with metaphors
\nAnd similes
\nAnd meanings that twist away
\nVerbal optical illusions<\/p>\n
The skyscraper cakes into a periwinkle
\nSourdough magenta St Patrick\u2019s day gift.
\nAs the cloud drops into a fog and spreads along the storefront.
\nAs the cloud drops from the sky into a fog along the storefront.
\nAs clouds, fog, periwinkle, magenta mix in a confusion of camouflage
\nAnd lemon or lime meringue.
\nThe gumboot chitons sensing diversion, rise from the sea
\nCrawling along the streets until
\nThey meet up on the hill above the storefront.
\nWe call out the national guard
\nAnd they in turn misunderstand what the gumboot chitons are
\nAnd call upon the forest rangers
\nWho also have no clue what they are dealing with.<\/p>\n
The owner of the skyscraper
\nAlong with the storefront tenant
\nCame with their shotguns
\nAnd along with the national guard
\nAnd forest rangers declared war
\nOn the molluscs
\nWho fight back with needle precision.
\nNeither side could beat back the other.
\nA national emergency was called
\nUntil chefs from the Caribbean contained them
\nIn boiling pots though some were fried.
\nThe war ended with a feast
\nOf gumboots, wine or beer.<\/p>\n
