The day they appeared<\/p>\n

It wasn’t all at once.<\/p>\n

Some appeared in tandem<\/p>\n

but most, most were static<\/p>\n

All were the same icy blue<\/p>\n

And through them came the shadows<\/p>\n

Harmless shadows<\/p>\n

latching on<\/p>\n

To our own shadows<\/p>\n

Some gained many shadows<\/p>\n

Some gained only one.<\/p>\n

A hierarchy formed,<\/p>\n

the more you had the better<\/p>\n

And more portals\u00a0 each day<\/p>\n

Brought more shadows<\/p>\n

The bottom tier could pick on me,<\/p>\n

because the day the portals appeared<\/p>\n

My shadow vanished.<\/p>\n

And fed up, I ventured, wondering<\/p>\n

“What happens if I go through a portal?”<\/p>\n
