Villanelle – A Friend to Guide Me
Can I greet you as a friend
I may not recognise, but will know you
when you come for me at the end.
Going where others cannot send
anything other than their love.
Can I greet you as a friend?
Will I leave broken hearts that will never mend;
when they learn I have gone away with you,
when you come for me at the end.
Just one, or do all shadows rend
souls from flesh to be taken in love.
Can I greet you as a friend?
I don’t know yet; I won’t pretend
that I will ever understand you
when you come for me at the end.
Within the crowd how can you blend,
when I know that you and I are bound in love.
Can I greet you as friend,
when you come for me at the end.

It is amazing how you have mastered the villanelle. Bravo!
Thank you Danielle, I am honoured that you think so. I very much like this form and tend to return to it more often than any other. I am very pleased that you liked this poem.
