2022 Poetry Marathon, Hour 8

Hour eight poem, based on the prompt:

When the train reaches the tunnels
the sound changes

the scene outside the window
changes to shades of black
punctuated by the occasional sign or signal

Attention shifts from outside to inside
I open a beer, open my journal

and write down thoughts
I will soon forget

After the first trip, I know where I am
when the train reaches the tunnels

Attention shifts from outside to inside
maybe I entertain a wish or two
I hope will come true when I arrive

and then maybe, just maybe
I learn where I’m going

  1. The opening lines are intriguing, as it makes me want to know more about what will happen after entering this tunnel… tunnels evoke a sense of mystery. I also like the lines “attention shifts from outside to inside… open my journal / and write down thoughts I will soon forget” — very relatable and yet it is very satisfying to be able to engage in this sense of inferiority. Great poem!
