Asleep

The sleep of the dead,

Begins as others awake.

Still, dreamless slumber

Restores the deprivation.

This lack of sleep –

Slowly, dreams begin

A thin coat of sweat covers me.

The sun makes its appearance known,

Prying through my eyelids.

Sounds of life outside –

Dogs, a lawn mower, stray spoken words –

Waking, the day is missed.

  1. Welcome Laurie! Congratulations on this your first marathon! I really enjoyed the movement and overall tone of this poem…I appreciated that right off the away, the first line, reflected the poem…you were quickly drawn into the story of this poetry. Asleep- The sleep of the dead. I loved this line’ “Still, dreamless slumber” perfectly evokes feelings of a deep sleep and just upon waking…Beautiful work!
