#23- A Thousand Splendid Suns

An uncanny friendship between two women

Bonded through pain and suffering

Eventually, they escaped, but how and when

One old and bitter, beaten

The other young, experiencing a summer fling

An uncanny friendship between two women

The younger one forced into a marriage while pregnant

The older one faced to bite the dust, fuming

Eventually, they escaped, but how and when

The older one nurtured the latter’s children

The daughter dusted, while the son lavished like a king

And somehow a friendship forged between the women

Tattered clothes of ragged linen

To an orphanage, the young daughter was sent packing

They planned their escape not knowing when

Laila and Mariam had come to their decision

Laila finally escaped with her summer fling

An uncanny friendship between the two women

Eventually, they escaped, but not with Mariam

This verse is written as a Villanelle, 5 tercets and one Quatrain with a limited Rhyme scheme- the tercets following aba, while the quatrain follows abaa.
