Hour 12 – Summer nights taste better with you

The juice of a ripe plum rolls down my chin
while the citrus scent of geraniums perfume the air

Our laugher, like fireworks, paints the sky gold;
the fading fingers of the sun tangle our hair

A chorus of crickets underscores stories
shared over peach pie and wine

We welcome the moon as she inches skyward
and we do not mourn the loss of sunshine

For we wrap ourselves in blankets
and memories and know that here we are free

To open our hearts, share our scars,
and be all we’ve ever dreamed we could be.

  1. “A chorus of crickets underscores stories
    shared over peach pie and wine”
    Hope you don’t mind, but I am sitting outside with you, listening to the crickets, and yearning for a piece of pie

    “We welcome the moon as she inches skyward
    and we do not mourn the loss of sunshine”
    It is so true how the moon moves and we never worry about the sun. We know it always comes back.

    Gorgeous poem of hope!

  2. I love the beautiful pictures you paint and feel like I am in the poem as I read it. You have fantastic turns of phrase. I particularly love this:

    “Our laugher, like fireworks, paints the sky gold;
    the fading fingers of the sun tangle our hair”

  3. I read the comments that have gone before and am happy that I have a different perspective to share. For me the final 2 verses hold hope… though your entire poem is brimming with beautiful phrases and metaphors.

    “For we wrap ourselves in blankets
    and memories and know that here we are free

    To open our hearts, share our scars,
    and be all we’ve ever dreamed we could be.”

    The images here… Memories are like a Blanket… And bring free in this space (and I am assuming protected and safe too)… The opening of one’s heart is also to be vulnerable (“sharing scars”) … I use these images frequently in the meditations I conduct. I think you’ve done a brilliant job here. May you be blessed.

  4. Wow!! Thank you for this poem, Sarah! Everyone who has commented thus far has shared my feelings as I read this poem – hopefulness and comfort in the gathering of like souls; those who understand and are open and accepting…
