ashes ashes

(Continuation of  Poem 1, Hour 1, and Poem 2, Hour 2)

She woke

the sun blunted dim

mucous yellow

she is covered in ash

ashes of her friends

her family

her neighbors

her strangers

they lined her lashes

falling onto her face

what will you do now?

they whispered into her ears

Before Darkness

(continuation of Poem 1 of Hour 1)

she shudders

the uncertainty moments before

are a welcomed dream

pungent air

singed

sulfuric taste

in her hovel there was hope

the maroon blood rust moonlight

she heaves up the hill

at the apex,

it rains ashes ashes

she looks out

her fallen city a corpse

she is the only one

thumbnail

it was short

ephemeral

not even

a blink

half a blink

don’t care

forget about it

please

you forget about

and you

and you

curt

cursory

crisp

stop asking me

blunt

brusque

brief

bastard

nothing to say about it

succinct

scant

small

in the bolts of my life

please

forget it

thumbnail

the end

they’re coming

she thinks

can’t be sure

so long since she’s seen light

weeks

time drips slowly down here

collecting

into lonesome puddles

she will not be saved

she thinks

the waiting will kill her first

she thinks

anticipation

the dread of uncertainty

she can’t stand it anymore

she says aloud

unlocking the inner door

she says it again

unbolting the outer door

she says it louder

opening the hatch

she screams

I can’t stand it anymore

as she is met with the smother of

darkness

Introduction: Imee Cuison

Hello! I am excited to be part of this year’s Poetry Marathon! I am located in Charleston, SC. I’ve never done anything like this before. I have a six month old daughter. I am a software engineer when I’m not hanging out with her. Looking forward to getting some solid writing in this Saturday!
