rant

i hate the word

“meat”

i don’t think that we should use it

not anymore

the phrase “i eat meat” allows

for a separation

a buffer

a slight of hand

to distract us

the eater

and the audience

from what’s really going

on

i think

believe

feel

that everyone should be required to say

“i eat animals”

not

“i eat meat”

or

“i love the smell of meat on the grill”

everyone must speak

the truth

“i eat animals”

“i love the smell of animals on the grill”

fuck the charade

because we are all meat

we are

and

my cat is

your kid’s hamster

are we going to toss them in a skillet for dinner?

Hour 9 The spider

Spider crawls here
In an attempt to web
It’s nest around mine
Should I stand and stare
Or prick a finger
To dismantle
His last attempt
To survive

19. Peace in Space

She came here to quiet her mind
After every round of gathering with the humans
Humans were so noisy
Here alone with the light emanating from all around
She could still her thoughts
And take it all in
And reenergize her depleted supply
No one knew this place
She used her mind to get here
She was fortunate that Antares
Had taught her such things as travelling to spaces
Beyond the earth’s realm
To meditate, replenish, and relax

Pathfinders

Gorgeous.
Luscious.
Vicious
Callous.

Infinite space, callous, vicious grand.
Search and find, a gorgeous, luscious land.

THIRD RAIL OF POLITICS #2

Back in London the performance was spoiled.

Pearl’s harbor had no mice playing on the tracks.

Later, on the telephone with Julian, after Pere Lachaise, we tried to figure out the meaning of the cosmos.

We have never grown up but, at least, we can laugh about it.

A funnel of dreams spiraling through Ira’s homemade pipe.

ALIEN REGISTRATION OFFICE

Open, open, open for business.

Business as usual.

Business to guard the ship from sinking in the storm…

We leave chalk outlines in the glow of a burned out light bulb.

A certain glimmer turning more and more gray.

Same as the Parisian sky.

Same as the still birth drowned in her mothers poisoned amniotic ocean.

Gysin plays at the Louvre.

As if those monolithic figures were in dream time.

As if gypsy’s polish tarnished gold.

As if Notre Dame casts our sins into the seine below…

Lakshmi chips away at the catacombs.

Junkies shiver in the metro.

Living humans are sacrificed.

When I tried to pin him down he conducted an out of tune orchestra on my behalf.

I felt-

spoiled

vulnerable

Infinity by Comparison

After dinner at Chez Désespoir,
when the wine, the brie,
cherry gazpacho, the sole,
the fruit and cheese with
honey glaze were cleared,
after he gave her a ring with
a rock as big as Jupiter,
she buried her face in her hands.
She said, “I need space.” He said:
“You want to be an astronaut?”

The next morning he popped up
at her work, deed in his hand to
a split level house in the suburbs.
Two thousand square feet
and that was the garage.

She watched him waving
in her rearview as she pulled away
back seat bulging with her bags.
Wiped from her cheek a single tear.
On the surface he was all she’d
ever want—sexy, successful, sweet.
But the universe was a tiny ball,
hidden in a thimble,
next to the space inside his skull.

Prompt 19

Metaphysics (prompt 19)

Physicists believe that the universe is shaped

like the inside of a soccer ball, with holograms

projecting all possible angles of view like Indra’s net;

that black holes extrude through the walls of space-time

like scattered spikes that can suck us out

of this world and into another (could we but survive).

They trumpet dark matter and dark energy,

Places so black that nothing appears to exist.

Neutrinos that no one can see, pour through the gaps

In the particles of our bodies each second,

Without witness, outside the range of sight, unfelt.

Gloriously, we evolved for this world and time,

small bags of water, composed of nothing

But billions of competing colonies of bacteria

animated by a life vibration no one comprehends.

We are stardust. We are eternity experiencing itself

as separation from oneness. We are a hive of cells,

bacteria and systems that let us function

as a singular entity. We have senses to

experience life—our raison d’etre. So darkness fades.

Quivering waves fill our ears with sounds

made in the ancient past, taking light years to arrive.

The sounds of star births and atoms colliding,

of movement and the pulsing of galaxies.

Even hymns of praise and campfire songs

once sung reverberate indefinitely in space.

We are moved to dance and sing in reply like

human Chladni plates.

Our eyes perceive the waves of light bouncing

off imagined forms, and give it names like red and sky blue.

The brilliant nuance of color startles and pleases our eyes.

The tastes of bitter and sweet, sour and salt, define

the objects we start mouthing as infants.

The smells of sweet lilacs and hyacinth, of urine and death,

fill us with emotion and memories of our experiences.

We were made for this world and this time,

We inconsequential life forms of perhaps random origin.

This small, blue planet whose beauty we uncovered

as we floated through space, reveals itself because we experience

explosions of sound and elaborate eruptions of color.

Prompt for Hour Twenty

Nature poems are so common, but that is for a reason, there is so much beauty in nature.

For the prompt this hour I want you to write a nature poem with a twist. I want you to write a poem about nature interacting with man made things. It could be about watching a beautiful eagle while standing in a strip mall parking lot, it could be about planting trees in a small city park, it could be about anything as long as it involves both the natural world and the un-natural one.
