Hour Seven: Shrunken Head

Hour Seven: Shrunken Head

It had belonged to a man, a warrior in the Andes who met his end
among the headhunter tribes who lived there then.
They sewed his eyes shut, closed his mouth with wooden splints,
soaked his head in an herbal concoction
to shrink it to a third in size.
An overnight smoking, a decorating ritual in the morning,
and his evil power would also be reduced.
Bereft of all supernatural strength,
the head could be returned to its tribe.

Now I gaze at it through its glass case
in the museum in San Juan.
I know its closed eyes could not see me
and yet I feel an accusatory stare.
“We were barbaric?
And your leaders,
They are so civilized?”
“Touché,” I murmur
as I move on
to the next display.

Much Relief

have you ever had one of them days, one of them months? One of them years?

the kind where you want to cry, but you can’t.
you can’t express anything. Like your numb? An uncomfortable numbness. An empty feeling that weighs more than the mountains.

you want to cry. The tears don’t fall. You want to laugh. But silence rests itself on you.

anger doesn’t quite cut it, for you feel guilty because there isn’t anything to be angry at.

just numbness. Only numbness. Empty.

it’s rough to be hollow.

then the day comes. You can laugh.
you can cry! You can feel!

the roses smell more fragrant. The coffee has an extra kick.

cherish the title moments! Much relief!

Gone Too Soon /6th Hour

I wish I could have loved you
The way you deserved to be loved

But you ran with the wild ones
Not easily harnessed, a free spirit

I saw a side of you that no one saw
A side I longed to honor and teach

Your mind, heart and soul weren’t ready
They were all just beyond my reach

I sat and waited year after year
Reserving the words you might want to hear

Time moved on slow and steady
I gave up pursuing, you still were not ready

We met a few times but you were in love
I decided to leave it to our Father above

Little did we know our time would be lessened
Our final date cut short, it never happened

My life quickly ended one day after work
By a demon who had no regards for my worth

I left with a longing I felt deep inside
I pray we will meet in the afterlife.

I watch from above and I guide from afar
You will always be embedded in my heart like a scar.

Confidence is a dress that always fits (Hour 7)

Lagos traffic at close of business does a thing or two to you

then it leaves you grumpy and tired

Your body feels heavy but at the same time, you can’t feel a thing

You stare at your reflection in the mirror as you strip out of the day’s clothing

Then you wear confidence

Your smile goes wide as you say to yourself

“Girl, you are so fine”

When you’re full as a drum of water

And your body bounces like a panda

Your tummy sits sticking out and you are decorated with rolls of fat in every place

-all the ways society makes you feel out of place

you rub your bulge and caress the excess skin

you say to myself

“Girl, you are thick in the right places”

When work wears you down

when the schedule squeezes the life out of you-

so much that you cannot eat

Or when your body loses its rolls of goodness

and the bones stick out calling attention to themselves

you admire how you can give any model a run for their money

you call yourself what you are-

“A babe!”

This dress always fits

It is the air the room needs

it is comfy,  it is free

a replica of home

that is how you keep your confidence in check.

Poem 5: The Growing Vine

Observe the growth of the vine,
To understand what little time
We have, under this burning sun,
For soon you shall see none.

The years shall steal your health and vigour,
Weaken bones and diminish your figure.
But before you succumb to your earthly grave,
Remember – hope is not Time’s to enslave.

Fast grows the vine, without consideration
Of the dull, poisonous, creeping trepidation,
All creatures of a certain age begin to feel,
When the shadows of death become too real.

So live as you will, not as you must,
Do all that you can before you turn to dust.
And give no mind to the inching of time,
But seek the wisdom of the growing vine.

Hour six: the writer’s life

The book of short stories sat opened
on a page of endless dialogue,
the author having chosen
to portray his characters
through spoken word
and not by action or deed.

The book of short stories sat opened
while the reader, tired
of absorbing dialogue, chose
to take a break to write
a scene for himself,
A curious action indeed.

As in Michel Tremblay’s “Belles-Soeurs,”
he wanted an act in which
the actors spoke freely.
But unlike “Hills LIke White Elephants”
he had not one ounce of
Hemingway’s skill.

The book of short stories sat opened
on the table beside the bottle
of scotch and the carton
of smokes next to the paper
on which twas written
“Writing bloody kills.”

Dark

I am dark
I blend with the dark
I blend with the night
I am dark
A colour that strikes fear in your pale heart
I am dark
Svelte, smooth
Easy on the eyes
Easy on the hands
I am dark

Hour 8: Encountering a Harvest Moon in a Shin-matsudo Onion Field

Because I didn’t like the prompts and four is an unlucky number

That fall night in Shin-matsudo

Walking home along the

ripening onion fields

turning a corner to find the harvest moon

blocking the path ahead.

So large it could have landed like a sideways saucer

So close I could reach out and fall into its cold fire, but

my path was to the left

my destination home.

Years have gone

leaving the memory of

Basking in the

burning light of a Japanese red moon, and

choosing to rest in my own bed rather than

following the call of fire

venturing to other worlds — or

drowning in the flames.

Big Red (Hour 7)

Big Red

Our pond is a symphony of stories.

Dug twenty feet from our home

in the horse pasture that long before

had been part of a forest.

I look across at the totem that Vic built

in a piece of old growth cedar that had

been sitting in his yard.

What do you see in it? I asked

A Thunderbird, he replied.

Across from that are big leafed plants three feet high,

maybe a hundred of them that monopolize a twelve foot hill,

a present from Miriam many years ago that was

one plant in a small pot that fit in my palm.

Most years I send her a photo saying something

like The kids done grown up!

The first tree that I planted in the whole yard was a willow

to the south that once had orange paint on it

when we returned from a long trip and

turned out to be a swastika.

The neighbors urged me to call the police

but I wanted to figure it out for myself and

proved my mettle as a detective.

After a talk with the guilty kids

and parents there is now a peace pole

and shrub nearby that the boys planted as a

token of redemption and understanding.

And then there’s Big Red that I haven’t seen this year.

A monument to survival, he may have met his demise.

I used to put fifty feeder fish a year in the pond. They were small

and grey but grew large and beautifully orange/red

until the herons would pick off every one of them.

I outsmarted them and got a dozen fish too large for herons to eat.

The first night I heard the angry snarls of raccoons decimating

most of them but not Big Red and one other unnamed motley colored fish.

They were survivors and have lasted many years.

I have a tinge of sadness as the water surface is still

but still I have some hope because I know Big Red

knows how to hide.

Yet I also know that the pond reflects all our lives

and the transitory nature of all sentient beings.

We’re here for a while and then go the way of Big Red.

Truth is Always Decided by Those in Power

Know the conclusion before the
start this again and you will
understand what it is you
desire to be different this
time will not wait for you to
change this story to change yourself

Hold tight to the path I will
forge within yourself strength and
resolve that you will conduct yourself with
honor those who were here before
you cannot be the last to take up this
fight not for things but the people you believe in

Learn to see your own
value those who will always speak
truth is always decided by those in
power was never meant to be the driving
force yourself to let go of this social
construct for yourself a better reality
