i wonder sometimes – Half Marathon Poem #7

i wonder sometimes

if there is that one True Love
for each of us, the one person
that is perfect and right,
if i should devote myself
to that search, and if so,
how on earth would I know them?

no, i think, on the whole,
the odds tell me that if that
person, the perfect one,
did or does or will exist,

they could have been born
and died long ago, or be yet
unborn, or be where i will
never be able to go.

so i will content myself
with what I have, which
is good, good enough,
and wander no more

  1. Very thought provoking. I think we have all had moments in our lives when we wonder is there someone else out there that I’m supposed to be with?

I love this stanza especially: “they could have been born/and died long ago, or be yet/
unborn, or be where i will/never be able to go” — if feels very Buddhist in that maybe we have many lives and our True love may not actually be in this life but in another.

So much to unpack in this poem — love it!

    1. Thank you!

To be honest, I got that concept from Harlan Ellison’s short story “Grail”. But, yeah, I feel like we too often can let the thought of possible perfection keep us from seeing what is good enough in our lives already.
